Studying abroad is often described as a life-changing experience, but sometimes the most meaningful moments come from unexpected opportunities. For Isabella Maria Marin Moncada, a Mexican exchange student from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Chihuahua, at SolBridge International School of Business during the Spring 2026 semester, one such moment came when she stepped far outside her comfort zone and into a cheerleading competition in South Korea.

Together with fellow participants, SolBridge regular student Hanna Unverhau and exchange student Tim Ryan Ballauff from Germany, Isabella joined an international team, embarking on a journey that would become one of the highlights of her exchange experience

“When I was first invited to join the team, I hesitated,” Isabella recalls. “The training sessions were held in another city, which meant spending several hours traveling every weekend. As an exchange student, weekends feel especially valuable, you want to explore, travel, and spend time with friends.”

Despite the challenges, Isabella chose to take the opportunity. Cheerleading had always been an important part of her life, and continuing it in a completely new environment felt like a rare chance to grow both personally and culturally.

The beginning, however, was not without its difficulties. While there were a few international members on the team, most participants were Korean, and communication was primarily in Korean. “I was nervous about not understanding everything,” she explains. “But everyone was incredibly welcoming and patient. I used basic Korean, English, gestures, anything to communicate.”

Over time, those initial barriers began to fade. Through long hours of practice, shared effort, and mutual encouragement, Isabella and her teammates formed strong bonds. The experience reflected the power of diversity and inclusion, as students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds came together through teamwork and mutual respect. “It made me realize that communication goes beyond language,” she says. “Respect, effort, and kindness can connect people from completely different backgrounds.”

Competition day brought a mix of excitement and nerves. Teams from different countries gathered, creating an atmosphere filled with energy and cultural diversity. Standing on the competition floor, Isabella felt a deep sense of pride, not only as part of her team, but also as an international student embracing a new challenge while representing SolBridge.

After weeks of preparation, the team delivered their performance. Regardless of the outcome, Isabella already felt accomplished. But when the results were announced, the moment became unforgettable: first place.

“Hearing our team’s name called was surreal,” she shares. “All the long trips, tiring practices, and moments of doubt suddenly felt worth it.”

Beyond the victory, the experience left a lasting impact. It strengthened Isabella’s confidence, improved her cross-cultural communication skills, and gave her a unique insight into Korean sports culture, an experience few exchange students encounter.

Reflecting on her journey, Isabella emphasizes that studying abroad is about more than academics or travel. “It’s about saying yes to opportunities that challenge you and help you grow,” she says. Experiences like this also highlight how global education can contribute to personal well-being, inclusive participation, and broader goals of building a more connected and equitable world.
